Value System Design is a set of principles, techniques and tools that allow complex systems of interdependent processes to be designed to deliver a specified quality, time and cost performance. VSD is more effective, safer, quicker and cheaper than conventional incremental system improvement methods.

Why use Value System Design?
Systems of interdependent value streams often exhibit counter-intuitive behaviour. So to predict the impact of a planned change to a system it is necessary to be able to represent and manage the complexity created by the interconnected streams. With this approach it becomes possible to explore the behaviour of a complex system; to learn more about it; and to evaluate the impact of changes on all parts of the system.

How do I learn Value System Design?
Value System Design builds on the foundation of conventional Value Stream Improvement (VSI) techniques such as Lean Thinking and Six Sigma by integrating them with Theory of Constraints and adding tools borrowed from Operational Research. One key design tool is discrete event simulation (DES) that allows the system designer to accurately represent even the finest detail of the value system form and function. To create, verify and apply these powerful predictive models requires not only the tools but also experience of the foundations of Lean, Operations Management, Six Sigma, Process Design and Experimental Methods.
